    Laptop Extender

I have a PIII laptop with 256MB of RAM running XP. Would it be possible to rig this thing as an extender for my Media Center PC? If so, what would I need to make it possible?

AFAIK there are no "soft" extenders for MCE, you have to buy the hardware extender or an xbox. If you're just looking to view your media in another room you can use www.orb.com to do that, but it is not MCE.

Can this software operate over a home network or does it have to happen over the internet?

I was also wondering if it is possible to network the two computers and then on the laptop set it up as a remote desktop to the MCE machine. In theory, you should then be able to have full MCE functionality on the laptop.

It should be noted that I'm a complete novice when it comes to networking and I could be speaking cr*p!

Nope.  Won't work.  The MCE front-end is a DirectX application and DirectX is not supported via Remote Desktop.

Aha... Thanks beb. It is beginning to dawn on me that there is no way around this besides using an extender; just a bit pricey unfortunately.

recent developments with webguide4 show that it is possible to have a "soft" extender, as webguide4 now also supports real time live tv streaming from your mce machine (so you get photos, music, vidoes, recorded tv and LIVE tv at your client end)
